Career Counselling

At some point or the other, everybody of us has had to stop and think about the big question – what exactly do I have to do with my life? The question may sound philosophical, but nobody has really escaped this question. There is a little ‘toned down’ version of this question and all the students face this version of question and it is an equally big question for them. The question is – Which career is my career? If you’re looking for more tips,a counselor can help has it for you.

Everybody of us has something special within. Well, not everybody of us can have the intellectual capacities of Newton and Einstein or artistic genius of Leonardo da Vinci or Michael Angelo, but we do have something that can make a small difference in this big world. Just that we need something or somebody to make us aware of what we have. Often we feel that we know ourselves and we know what we want to do, but in most of the cases it turns out to be a superficial understanding. It takes an expert to find out ‘what lies beneath.’

What is career counselling?

Career counselling is the process of ‘understanding’ a student thoroughly and recommending a suitable career option for him/her. It helps students unearth their true potential and choose a path that is best suited to his/her capacities. It would not be an exaggeration to say that career counselling could be as vital as a health treatment given in time. Without a proper ‘dose’ of direction, there is a danger of getting drifted and students have to pay for it dearly in future.

The process of counselling generally involves written tests (aptitude and IQ) followed by one on one discussion with an expert. While the tests would normally consist of multiple choice questions, the discussion aims at exploring the ‘hidden details’ that help the counsellor understand the student in totality. It is an informal interview and student can ask whatever he/she wishes to (in the context of education and career).

The counsellors are formally trained individuals in the field and students can be completely at ease while talking with them. At the end of the session, the counsellor would give you a list of few focus areas where you can make a bright career. The suggestions are supported by the data analysed during the process. Some counselling centres might also offer you an industry overview of the fields recommended for you.

A new mode of counselling, i.e. online career counselling is an in-thing today. With the help of internet, the counselling process becomes much easier and students can get faster results.
